Different versions have it as either a nose ring or a "forehead" jewel and sometihng similar is mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. I'm not sure if the latter would be something worn on a headband/tiara or stuck on like a bindi, but nose rings are cahracteristic of Indian style jewelry and not seen on depictions of women in Eastern Mediterranean cultures such as Greece or Egypt. However, the people of ancient Mesopotamia did have extensive trading contact with India. How far to the west did this custom extend before the 1990s?
