What if the cruiser Chongqing, recently defected to PLAN in 1949, had not been sunk by ROCAF B-24 bombers? A surviving and operational Chongqing would have been a tremendous and early boost to PLAN. Conversely, what if Chongqing had never defected? This would have affected ROCN morale and it would have been much more difficult for the PLA to cross the river in the presence of a sizeable ROCN naval force.
