as Mexicans are in California. In Taiwan you'll still see people of Chinese origin working menial or construction type jobs, whereas in most of California you will not see a single Anglo construction worker. The vast majority of people in Taiwan are not of Vietnamese descent, unlike Calilfornia where people of Mexican ancestry (doesn't matter what kind of Mexican, Oaxanans are lumped in with horseback riding Sonorans) are the largest population group in the state. In Taiwan many folks are still rather insular in their thinking, and even without the Viets people would just pick on each other based on their ethnic background or north versus south or urban versus rural. It's a natural if unfortunate human tendency, and even the ethnically homogeneous Koreans do this based on regional differences and socioeconomic backrground.
