patently untrue. Is it? It is not his problem what people will think. His job, as a journalist, is to write a factually correct story. I believe that in this case he did that. If you have information to the contrary, then share it!
Yes, there are many Western journalists who do their best to put China in a bad light and seldom, if ever, have anything good to say about the country. They use dubious facts and misleading arguments. Some of them fear China and others are envious because of what the country has accomplished. I am not interested in whether a particular writer gives a balanced view; all I ask is that what he writes is true. I can find the balance for myself. And there are enough people who only want to hear one side of the story.
Get used to critical articles about China from foreign and, increasingly, from sources within China. Criticism is good, as long as it is based on factual information. It helps a country, an organization, a business to improve.
If what Garnaut wrote is correct and corruption within the PLA has reached a point where the defense of the country might, just MIGHT, be impaired, would you not want it to be eradicated with root and all? Apparently Hu Jintao does.
