Japan finds 'no abnormality' at China dumpling plant: report

BEIJING, Feb 6 (AFP) Feb 06, 2008
A Japanese investigator said Wednesday he had found "no abnormality" at a Chinese plant at the centre of a food safety scare over frozen dumplings that has erupted in Japan, state media said here.
The unnamed investigator, part of a four-member team, visited the Tianyang Food Plant in north China's Hebei province on Tuesday, the Xinhua news agency reported.

"The plant is very clean and well managed, and no abnormality has been detected," he was quoted by Xinhua as saying.

Wang Daning, a senior Chinese food safety official, said he had let the four Japanese experts see as much relevant equipment and material "as possible".

Thousands of Japanese have reported falling ill after eating the frozen meat dumplings, with 10 diagnosed with pesticide poisoning and major food companies recalling their products.

Japan's health minister on Tuesday said the dumplings may have been deliberately contaminated.

there were only 10 people affected in a single area, not the hundreds reported by the media. Also, more and more evident is being digged up that the poisoning is intensional by third parties.

Japanese always like to poison. That is their traditional behavior.

Maybe it was the work of a competitor..Chinese or Japanese.

If he is Chinese, then his action is suicidal, because the Japanese would shun dumplings imported from China ; so, more likely, the culprit is a Japanese.

Nah. When a food product is tampered with, the sale of the product will drop,

including other brands of the same product. Most consumers don't have the time or spare memory to remember a particular brand for some trivial everyday nonessential consumables, and just don't buy the product. The other reason may be due to some psychological connection or something like that I am not qualified to bring it further. So, if you are producing this kind of product, you don't like your competitor's being tampered with.

Of course, this does not apply if there is only one product one brand, but then in this case, you don't have competitors.

your theory applies if both products are made domestically. But due to the headlines with Chinese produce, the meaning is much more widespread, which basically will make Japnese consumers look harder at the label to see the place of origin. This could mean Pomelos, tangerines, dumplings, kimchi, mushrooms etc. Chinese produce have been very competitive in the Korean and Japanese markets, due to the high costs of production in the target domestic markets. The agricultural lobby is very powerful in Japan with significant influence in the LDP.

Someone targetted imports, but all sales dropped, imports or domestic.

>> the meaning is much more widespread,

I know. A japanese family friend of ours got a phone call from her parent in japan telling her not to buy Chinese imports. Frozen Chinese foods are usually packed locally anyway.

The trouble is how one knows the intention of the perpetrator. What happens if it is a random attack and Chinese foods were picked because of pure chances since Chinese products are more. How are we sure? Do you know the perpetrator? People generalise. Maybe, in japan, they generalise to Chinese imports. In other places, people may just generalise to all foods on the supermarket shelves.

So, it is never a good idea to target your competitor this way, apart from of course it is criminal.
