Minister-counselor at Russia’s diplomatic mission in Japan Mikhail Galuzin was summoned in Tokyo for explanations regarding the incident with a Japanese schooner detained early August 16 near Kuril islands, at which weapons were used. According to a source in the Japan Foreign Ministry, Japanese FM European department issued a protest against the “unjustifiably harsh conduct of the Russian border guards,” Gazeta.ru reports. According to a Japanese official report, Russian border guard patrol ship on 7:25 local time (2:25 Moscow time) opened fire on a Japanese fishing schooner resulting in one crew member being killed. The vessel has been convoyed to the Kunashir island. Coastguard ships have been dispatched to the incident site for gathering information. According to the Russian FSB Sakhalin coastguard department public relations group, the Japanese schooner was found by a Russian border guard patrol ship early August 16. During a pursuit, the schooner’s captain was repeatedly demanded by visual and acoustic signals to lie ahull. The captain, nevertheless, ignored the commands.
